چکیده

We have operated successfully glass Resistive Plate Counters (RPC) at the BELLE experiment by using a nonflammable gas mixture of 30% argon, 8% butane-silver and 62% freon, HFC-134a. This freon is nonozone depleting freon, but a freon has a high global warming potential in general. Thus a gas mixture for RPC might be desired to be freonless in the near future. We have tested the performance of glass RPC operated in streamer mode with a nonfreon gas mixture of argon, butane, CO2 and/or O2 gases, and found an efficiency of about 90%. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Test of freonless operation of resistive plate chambers with glass electrodes F 1 mm gas gap vs 2 mm gas gap

Non-freon gas mixtures (Ar/iso-C4H10) were tested as the chamber gas for 1 and 2 mm gas gap Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with float glass as the resistive electrodes, operated in the streamer mode. With the narrower (1 mm) gas gap, streamer charge is reduced (B1=3), which reduces the dead time (and dead area), associated with each streamer, improving the detection efficiency. The best perfor...

AFM pictures of the surfaces of glass RPC electrodes damaged by water vapor contamination

We present surface pictures of the damaged electrodes from the Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPCs) taken by an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). For the test, a set of chambers were operated with freon mixed gas (damaged) and freonless gas (not damaged), contaminated with 1000 ∼ 2000 ppm of water vapor. In the AFM pictures, clear differences in damage are seen between the electrodes in the cham...

Quenching properties of gas mixture in glass RPC operated with streamer mode

Quenching properties of gas mixture in a resistive plate chamber operated with streamer mode were investigated using optical image taken by the CCD camera and signal pulse waveform recorded by the digital oscilloscope. We have tested four quenching gases: C2H2F4, C2F6, CBrF3 and SF6. Streamer size, brightness and induced charge linearly depend on the ratio of Ar to quenching gas and their slope...

Small pad RPCs as detector for high granularity digital hadron calorimetry

Requirements for sampling hadron calorimetry with gaseous active medium and digital read-out for a future linear eþe -collider (FLC) are formulated. Monogap glass Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) prototypes equipped with 1 cm read-out pads and operated in saturated avalanche and streamer modes are studied as a possible detector for digital hadron calorimetry. Operating characteristics of the proto...

SF6 quenched gas mixtures for streamer mode operation of RPCs at very low voltages

In the present paper we describe a search for gases that allow to reduce the energy of the electrical discharge produced in Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode, by reducing both the operating voltage and the released charge. This can be achieved, with current gas mixtures of argon, tetrafluoroethane (TFE) and isobutane, by reducing the total amount of quenching components ...
